Tabeguache Fire Update

Update from GMUG: July 8th


Location: 7 miles northeast of Nucla


Start Date:  July 5, 2018

Size:  Approximately 500 acres

Percent Contained:  10%

Jurisdiction: USFS

Cause:  Lightning

Vegetation:  Pinyon-juniper brush

Summary:  At 10:34 p.m. on Friday, July 6, 2018, the lightning-caused Tabeguache fire was reported seven miles northeast of Nucla, CO on the Grand Mesa, Uncompahgre and Gunnison National Forests (GMUG).

The fire has grown to approximately 500 acres and is ten percent contained. Additional resources arrived today and there are now approximately 100 firefighters working in steep terrain comprised of pinyon-juniper and brush. The fire area received rain overnight, which has led to reduced fire activity today. Today’s firefighting operations have focused on securing the east and south flanks of the fire. No structures have been lost, and none are threatened at this time.

Fire Behavior:  Low to moderate fire behavior with fire creeping and smoldering along with some isolated tree torching.

Structures Threatened: None


A temporary flight restriction has been ordered, is in effect over the fire area, and remains in place until further notice. This restriction includes “drones” or unmanned aerial vehicles. The public is reminded that “If you fly, we can’t!” Aerial fire suppression resources will be grounded if drones enter the restricted airspace, which could result in serious consequences.

Fire Restrictions:  Stage 2 fire restrictions are in effect on the Uncompahgre and Gunnison National Forests. Stage 1 fire restrictions are in effect on the Grand Mesa National Forest. Please refer for additional information.


Fire Weather: Cooling temperatures and thunderstorms are possible in the area.
