Ironic Twist in Avalanche Death

There’s a sad twist about last weekend’s avalanche death. The Colorado Avalanche Information Center says 40-year-old Longmont resident Peter Marshall was actually taking an advanced avalanche safety class when he was hit by a slide and killed near Red Mountain Pass on Saturday. Marshall was part of a group of 6 from the Silverton Avalanche School that triggered the fatal slide, it in turn caused another, and the 2 buried Marshall under at least 8 feet of snow. The school took to Facebook to express condolences to Marshall’s family, and point out his was the school’s first avalanche death since it started training people on how to avoid and survive them, in 1962.
